The cross has evolved through many forms since
earliest times and in many cultures has been regarded as a universal cosmic
symbol. This roughly drawn representation from a medieval
woodcut, is the simplest and most widespread symbol of Christianity,
representing the faith itself, the western Church, the Crucifixion and
Redemption, even Christ's Body itself. The symbol IHS was adapted from the
Greek symbol of Dionysos, as the monogram of Jesus, IH[όΪό]ό and later as
Iesous
Hominum Salvator, Jesus, the Savior of Man.
