History: Elizabeth Barrett and
Robert Browning enjoyed their now famous life together in Florence at the Casa
Guidi, which can still be visited today. Robert affectionately called her "My Little
Portuguese" because of her olive complexion. She later incorporated this
into the title of her collection of sonnets published in 1850, "Sonnets from the
Portuguese." This pendant is adapted from the opening line of Sonnet XLIII
and reads "How do I love thee, Let me count the ways." This is perhaps one
of the most well known love poems in the English Language.
