History:
From Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen
is one of our best loved novelists. Her sure sense of the human character; its
strengths and its weaknesses, are always apparent. Price and Prejudice has been
continuously in print since it was first published. It is a love story but one
about the economics of love – because in Jane Austen’s world, an advantageous
marriage was the only way for a young woman to “secure her future.” Born in
1775, in the rectory at Steventon, Jane Austen later moved to Bath in 1801, and
then to Southampton in 1806 after the death of her father. She then moved to
Chawton. She wrote “Sense and Sensibility” in 1811, and “Pride & Prejudice” in
1813. In 1817, she passed away, a novelist who would inspire generations to
come.
