History:
Taoism, is a
philosophical and religious system second only to Confucianism in China.
It teaches that happiness can be acquired through obedience to the requirements
of man's nature in accordance with the Tao, or Way, the principle of all nature.
It maintains that the individual should only seek to conform to the underlying
pattern of the universe, and thereby achieve unity with the Tao. Much
influenced by Buddhism, followers adopted a monasticism which concerned itself
primarily with the afterlife and a general philosophy of contemplation,
concentration and meditation.
