History: Poesy Rings reached their greatest popularity throughout Europe in the 16th and 17th Centuries, particularly in England and France, with Latin inscriptions being the most numerous. Still, French and English were the languages spoken by nobility, and so it follows that many of the Renaissance Poesy Rings have English and French inscriptions. Their popularity in Elizabethan England, is attested to by their frequent mention in the plays of Shakespeare:

"...Is this a prologue, or the poesy of a ring?"
