Museum Reproduction Sterling silver Poesy Rings are the ORIGINAL Promise Rings, with some dating as far back as 5BC.  The majority of poesy rings were found across western Europe, France, England and the Gaelic regions during the Renaissance and Medieval periods.  Since French remained the language of nobility until the late Medieval period, many of our Renaissance Poesy Rings are in French and English.  However, others have been found in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish and Russian.  The frequent mention of poesy rings in William Shakespeare's plays, attests to their popularity in 16th Century England:  "...is this a prologue, or the poesy of a ring?" where Shakespeare suggests that the poesy of a ring, is the beginning step in a relationship, or what we know today as a promise ring.

Poesy Tradition has it that words which touch the skin have a particular power.  Poesy Rings were traditionally given in sterling silver as promise rings and engagement rings.  The same style rings in gold, were later exchanged as wedding rings.  The Platinum version of the original promise ring, was given for the anniversary, however today, platinum poesy rings are also often used as wedding rings.  The tradition of Poesy Jewelry follows, with each pendant, cuff or bangle matching its ring counterpart.
